Our Pickering dentists diagnose and treat jaw pain or tightness to help relieve your TMD symptoms and address the underlying causes.
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) is a disorder of the jaw joints that can cause a host of painful symptoms. This is because your compromised jaw muscles have to work extra hard to do their job.
The temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk and eat.
TMD occurs when there are issues with this joint, the most common cause being misalignment of the teeth or jaw. There are also some other factors that may contribute to the disorder, including skull shape, genetics, airway issues or trauma to the jaw.
Once your dentist diagnoses you with TMD, they will provide you with a treatment plan to help relieve your symptoms and address its underlying causes.
If left untreated, TMD can lead to loose teeth and eroded jawbones. If you have symptoms of TMD, please contact our Pickering dentists to make an appointment and get a proper diagnosis.
